Staff Picks

After a night of acquiring all the candy in the neighborhood it is time to sit down and watch a good scary movie. The reviewers of Cinema Abyss have picked their top five Halloween night movies. Get some hot buttered popcorn, a nice cool drink, and enjoy a good freighting movie.

Number 5: FRIDAY THE 13th (1980) Camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp that was the site of a child's drowning. - IMDB

This movie stars very young Kevin Bacon. He does not make it.

Number 4: THE EVIL DEAD (1981) Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. - IMDB

Written and Directed by Sam Raimi. The film stars the amazing Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams.

Number 3: NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)  Several people are hunted by a cruel serial killer who kills his victims in their dreams. When the survivors are trying to find the reason for being chosen, the murderer won't lose any chance to kill them as soon as they fall asleep. - IMDB

This movie stars John Saxon, is Johnny Depp’s first movie, and Freddy Krueger is masterfully played by Robert Englund

Number 2: EXORCIST (1973) When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter. - IMDB

This is an all time classic. Stars Max van Sydow, and a very juvenile Linda Blair several years before she became a super freak.

Number 1: HALLOWEEN (1978) A psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood for the murder of his sister, escapes and stalks a bookish adolescent girl and her friends while his doctor chases him through the streets. - IMDB

This movie drips atmosphere. The director John Carpenter did a wonderful job in this low budget feature. Our number one pick stars the great Donald Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis, and cute youthful Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode.
